no more carpet.. now what?

So, I was anxious to pull up the carpet on the front stairs and on the landing- but I'm not sure I was ready for what I would find underneath. The stairs- we could handle, but the landing was a different story. The previous owners must have combined the wrong combination of stain/poly and caused a very delicate and "crackled" finish on the beautiful hard wood.

This finish was particularly interesting because it could be removed with a simple scrape of your nail. What to do? Leave it this way and sweep up the dust  from it peeling away each night? or.. invest in a couple of paint scrapers and take the finish off. You can guess which one we did.

Amazingly enough this process did not take too long, and did not completely break our backs. So, this is how our floor currently looks- and this is likely how it will stay until a lonely weekend this winter when I get the courage to buff and stain this baby.

Secondly, now that the carpet was removed from the stairs, we noticed that some of the treads were beginning to significantly droop in the middle. For this reason, the boys needed to roll up and their sleeves and rebuild the foundation of the top three stairs of our staircase. NO MORE CREAKING!

I was not involved in this project, but it seemed to cause some significant frustration for them- and took longer than anticipated- BUT, they did an amazing job, and now we have a secure staircase for the many years we will have this house.

This picture allows you to see the condition of the stairs- I can't wait for them to be stained and refinished! It will completely change the dynamic of the foyer.
